Vehicle Dyno Tuning Tips

Are you worried about your vehicle's performance? Would you want to increase your car's torque and horsepower? If yes, you should consider dyno tuning. Below is an excerpt with some tips on how to conduct a successful dyno tune.

Tip 1: Research On Your Engine

A mistake that most people make is tuning their engines before researching their capabilities. As such, they end up damaging their engines during the tune. Conduct extensive research to determine the following:

  • What are the stock torque and horsepower figures? They will allow you to know the amount of power that your vehicle has lost over the years.
  • The maximum amount of power that you can get from the engine.
  • The reviews of people who have tuned similar engines. For example, could be you need to replace internal engine components after tuning the vehicle.

Tip 2: Examine And Prepare The Engine For The Tune

For the tune to be successful, the engine must be in good condition. As such, service the vehicle and determine the need for an engine overhaul. A high-mileage vehicle could have a worn-out injector, crankshaft, camshaft, or water pump. Replace these components before tuning the engine.

Tip 3: Work With An Experienced Tuner

Below are some tips to help you choose a tuner for your project:

  • Assess the tuner's experience. For instance, have they tuned similar engines in the past? What kind of engines do they tune?
  • Check online reviews and interview customers to establish how customers perceive the tuner's services. As a rule of thumb, avoid tuners with negative client reviews.
  • What kind of equipment does the tuner use? High-quality dynos and diagnostics equipment could give better results.
  • What services does the tuner offer? Some tuners will repair your engine and sell aftermarket parts to improve the performance of your car.

Tip 4: Test The Vehicle After The Tune

You should always test the vehicle after the tune. It will help you establish whether the tune was successful. Typically, you should run the car at full throttle to assess its performance. For instance, more power means higher engine temperatures. As such, the vehicle could overheat. Deal with these issues at the earliest opportunity to avoid chronic problems in the future. In some cases, the engine will have too much power. While this might be fun on the open highways, you could have trouble operating the vehicle at low speeds. Therefore, you could ask the mechanic to detune the car.

When tuning your vehicle, research the engine, prepare the engine for the tune, work with experienced tuners and test the vehicle after the tune.
